Canopy collapse at Novi Sad railway station kills 14, Serbia declares day of mourning

Fourteen people were killed when a concrete canopy above the entrance to Novi Sad railway station collapsed at 11:52 a.m. on November 1, authorities said. Three injured people are in hospital in serious condition. The Serbian government declared November 2 a day of mourning.
Rescuers worked through the night clearing debris in search of survivors. The public prosecutor's office in Novi Sad has opened an investigation, which will also examine the works carried out on the building.
A recently renovated station
The 1964 station building reopened in July 2024 after reconstruction as part of the Belgrade–Budapest high-speed railway project, carried out by a consortium of Chinese companies. Construction Minister Goran Vesić said the canopy had not been included in the works, which experts and the opposition questioned, demanding publication of the full documentation.
