Justina Shiroka-Pula was elected president of Kosovo overnight on October 6–7 with 81 votes in the first round of voting in parliament, the Albeu news portal reported. The vote was held at 00:13 after the session ran past midnight.
The election took place after the October 6 deadline set by the Constitutional Court. Until then, parliament speaker Albulena Haxhiu had been acting president.
Out of the deadlock
Kosovo had been in institutional deadlock for months, with disputes over the constitution of parliament and the formation of Albin Kurti's government. A few days earlier, on October 5, protesters clashed with police in Pristina.
