Rebeca Grynspan leads Security Council straw poll for next UN Secretary-General

Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), is leading after an informal Security Council poll on António Guterres's successor, Reuters reports, as carried by the Times of Israel. She received 12 "encourage" and three "discourage" votes, while International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi is second with nine "encourage" votes.
The so-called straw polls are informal and confidential but show which candidates have a chance of getting through the Security Council, where each of the five permanent members has a veto.
What comes next
The Security Council recommends a candidate to the General Assembly, which then appoints them. Guterres's second term ends on December 31, 2026.
