US President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on November 5 that a decision on resuming the Iran war or a deal is coming: "You'll know soon enough," The National reports. Trump met his national security team on Wednesday and Thursday; according to the same source, Central Command (CENTCOM) is finalising preparations, but no order has been given.

"I would rather not destroy the rest of the country if possible, but maybe I will have to," Trump said.

New mine claims

Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) claim two more tankers hit mines and caught fire on November 6, one east of the Strait of Hormuz and one inside it, for using "unauthorized routes" with tracking systems switched off. Earlier they claimed five tankers and a tug had burned. No maritime authority has confirmed this, no ship names or flags have been released, and CENTCOM recently said all mines had been cleared.

Iran says the strait stays closed until the US meets seven demands, including lifting sanctions, releasing frozen assets and war reparations.

Diplomacy

Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad urged Trump in a phone call to avoid "further escalation," Doha said. Iran has reportedly sent Washington a nuclear proposal through Qatar. Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei met Vladimir Putin in Moscow on November 5, carrying a message from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
